22. How to Calculate Shipboard Cable Size?

The size of the Shipboard cable is measured just like an ordinary basic cable.


In order to calculate the resistance, divide the voltage of the cable by the current flowing in it.

R= V/I

By using this formula, you will get the resistance in ohm represented as .

For example: If you have 150 volts running through 50 amperes, then resistance will be:

R= 150/50

R= 3Ω

Cross-sectional Area

To measure the area, simply multiply the resistivity of the material used in the cable with the length of the cable.

For example, Aluminum has a resistivity of 2.7 x 10-8 Ωm. If the length of cable is 40,000 meters, then;

2.7 x 10-8*40,000 = 1.08 x 10-3Ωm2

Then divide your answer by the resistance you calculated:

1.08 x 10-3/3= 3.6 x 10-4m2


To measure the radius, divide the calculated area by π.

=3.6 x 10-4/3.142= 1.145 x 10-4m


Now to convert it into inches, just simply multiply your answer by 39.37.

(1.145 x 10-4)*39.37

= 4.51 x 10-3inch


Now, just multiply your answer by 2.

(4.51 x 10-3) *2

=9.02 x 10-3 inch

And there you have the size of your cable.
