PV1-F Solar Cable Buying Guide

Solar energy is quickly becoming a major player in the energy industry. With climate change becoming an ever alarming issue worldwide, the shift to renewable energy has picked up a lot of momentum.

PV1-FSolar cable is an important part of the solar energy ecosystem.

Residential and commercial solar energy systems rely on these cables to supply the power generated by solar panels.

Efficiency is key in this whole system as you want to maximize output and minimize energy loss.

This is why it’s integral that the cables you use with solar panels are of high-quality.

What is PV1-FSolar Cable?

PV1-F solar cable also called solar photovoltaic cable or PV cable, is a special cable designed specifically for solar energy systems.

This cable is for interconnecting power supplies, i.e., the solar panels in solar farms or other smaller solar energy systems such as residential solar energy systems.

PV1-F solar cable is used for fixed installations, both internal and external.

However, not all PV cables are suitable for underground installations.

Their job is basically to transfer the power generated by the solar panels to the power supply unit that then supplies energy to all the devices and lighting equipment.

PV1-F solar cable is often referred to as green energy cable, as solar energy is considered green (eco-friendly).

The construction of PV1-F solar cable isn’t that different from conventional electric cables.

However, it’s the materials used that distinguish them from other types of cables.

Here’s what the typical structure of a PV cable looks like:

The conductor in PV1-F solar cable is typically tinned copper, aluminum, or copper-clad aluminum, that can be solid or stranded.

The latter, of course, is more common, especially in solar farms.

The wires connected with panels usually have a copper conductor, while the larger size cables for feeders have an aluminum conductor.

In the US, solar PV cables are single conductor cables.

Also, these are non-armored cables.

The insulation in PV1-F solar cable is typically cross-linked polyethylene or XLPE.

Some manufacturers also use ethylene-propylene rubber (EPE) as insulation.

The color of the insulation layer is mostly white.

The insulation layer in PV1-F solar cable is usually thicker because of the many environmental conditions they have to tolerate.

The insulation and PV cables, especially in the US, are rated for weather resistance.

They are also rated for direct burial (Underground Service Entrance or USE-2 cables).

The insulation is typically thicker in PV1-F solar cable used outdoors.

For underground cables like USE-2, the insulation layer doesn’t have to be as thick.

Outer Sheath

The outer sheath is usually an electron beam crosslinked copolymer.

This outer sheath has to be weather and impact-resistant.

Most installations of solar panels are outdoors, so they are susceptible to damage by abrasion, wear, and other environmental conditions.

The sheath also protects the insulation and conductor from water.

The waterproofing rating differs by cables, with some just water-resistant and others fully waterproof.

The cables attached with panels directly must be waterproof, so that rain does not interfere with power transfer.

Solid vs. Stranded

Solar PV cables come with both solid and stranded conductors.

The stranded conductor is made of multiple wires twisted together.

This allows these cables to be more flexible than solid conductor cables.

Stranded conductor cables are appropriate for bigger solar applications, as they have a slight advantage over solid conductor with better conductivity.

Since they have more surface area in terms of wires, they can conduct current better.

That said, solid conductors may work just fine for smaller solar energy systems like those in residential units.

Besides the construction, the features or characteristics of these cables also distinguish them from other types.

These features are also important for selection as well.

Operating Voltage

The operating voltage of solar PV cables is 600 V, 1 kV, 1.5kV, and 2kV.

You need to figure out what voltage rating is needed for your particular solar module installation.

The bigger the installation and energy production, the higher the operating voltage of the cables.

Operating Temperature

Solar PV cables have to deal with a wide range of temperatures.

These may be installed outdoors in a very hot and humid climate, and also frigid cold temperatures with snowfall.

Manufacturers keep the weather conditions in mind when producing these cables, so a typical solar PV cable is able to withstand temperature ranging from -40 degrees to 90 degrees Celcius.

However, some cables, especially those that are fire-retardant, have even higher heat resistance.

Weather Resistance

This is perhaps the most important feature, at least in terms of the strength of the cables.

PV cables should be weather-resistant as they stay outdoors.

Sun, rain, wind, dust, and snow, all types of weather conditions can impact the solar energy system if the cables are not properly insulated against these conditions.

The outer sheath and insulation both use materials that are inherently weather-resistant (including UV resistance).

However, to make sure that the cables you’re using are, in fact, weatherproof, make sure they are rated for weather-resistance.

Cable standards can also help to ensure that the PV cables you choose will not wither in tough weather conditions.

Abrasion Resistance

The PV cables should ideally be abrasion-resistant as well.

The outdoor installation of these cables puts them at the risk of wear and tear.

Also, there’s the risk of damage by rodents, so a tough sheath can ensure the cable lasts long and doesn’t wear out so easily.

The standards for PV cable are new, as the solar energy sector is still growing.

However, now we have official cable standards from leading standardization and certification bodies.

These standards help specify the construction, application, and characteristics of PV cables, ensuring efficiency and safety.

EN 50618 is the most common standard for PV cables used all around the world.

The IEC has released its own standard for solar PV cables, which is similar to the BS system.

The new IEC standard for PV cables is IEC 62930.

Currently, there aren’t that many standards corresponding to solar PV cables.

However, as solar energy is poised to become a leading renewable energy source, there will definitely be more standards and certifications, even on regional levels.

Solar Cable Accessories

In addition to solar PV cables, you also need to invest in quality solar cable accessories.

These cables may require special PV accessories like cable glands, connectors, plugs, etc.

These accessories have to meet the same standards and conditions to maintain the quality and integrity of the solar energy system.

You will also need solar crimping tools for non-insulated open plugs.

Many accessories and tools are sector-specific, which is one of the reasons why solar panel installation costs can be high.

Solar energy production systems are present in many different industries.

The production scale also varies greatly, from small systems on residential rooftops to solar farms covering acres of land.

However, solar PV cables are standard in almost all solar module applications, regardless of size or purpose.

You’ll need solar PV cables for:

  • Residential solar panels
  • Solar farms
  • Constructional covered systems
  • Powering agricultural equipment
  • Commercial buildings
  • Industrial plants

Solar PV Cables Advantages

Solar PV cables are specifically made for use with solar panels, so they provide benefits that other types of cables fail to provide.

Here are some of the benefits:

UV Resistance: Solar panels are installed where there’s maximum sunlight exposure. That means the cables connected with them are susceptible to UV radiation. PV cables are UV-resistant, so they stay intact even when exposed to direct sunlight for hours at end.

Weather Resistance: PV cables have to deal with weather elements too, as they are mostly installed outdoors. The materials are weatherproof so rain, snow, dust, or moisture does not harm the cables. Some of the cables are also rated for immersion in water.

Easy and Safe Installation: PV cables are an integral part of the solar modules system, so they are designed specifically to meet the needs of those systems. That makes their installation very easy. These cables also ensure safety, especially considering they may be exposed outdoors.

Fire Retardant: Solar PV cables are also fire-retardant, which means they don’t propagate fire. Fire retardant cables are not the same as fire-resistant, however, they are helpful in case there’s a fire.

High Voltage Rating for Single Conductor: Solar PV cables are one of the very few single conductor cables that are rated for 600V or higher. Also, they can be buried directly (those for underground wiring) without a shield.

Solar PV cables are an important part of the solar energy production systems, regardless of the size or application.

These cables are able to last a long time outdoors, resisting the harsh weather conditions.

An ordinary cable might not be able to perform as well, which is why it’s necessary to use certified PV cables only.

It’s important to choose cables and manufacturers that comply with international standards.

You should also look out for safety ratings regardless of the final application.
